Members of the Maryland, Virginia and District of Columbia Congressional Delegations met outside the U.S. Capital with area Olympians and Paralympians to sign a resolution of support for Washington’s 2012 Summer Olympic bid.

D.C. delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton said, “this is a landmark resolution, which validates our region’s unwavering support to bring the 2012 Games to the capital of this great country. Our region, with the nation’s capital as its core, has the natural historic and national assets to make the Olympic and Paralympic Games memorable for generations to come, and we look forward to hosting the world in 2012”.

Virginia Congressman Tom Davis said, “Virginia is proud to be a committed partner to bringing the Olympics and Paralympics to our region in 2012. With our airports, existing and planned mass transit capabilities and well-developed tourist infrastructure, we stand ready to host the best Games ever”.

And Maryland Congresswoman Connie Morella added, “hosting the Games will provide a powerful legacy and unique benefits for all the citizens of the Chesapeake region including $5.3 billion in positive economic impact, approximately 70,000 jobs and the opportunity to improve our region’s infrastructure”.

The resolution focuses on key principles, including building less, not more; utilizing mass transit; and protecting the environment.
