Craig Bromell, president of the 7,000-member Toronto police association, hinted there could be some sort of labour action by the police union during the IOC’s technical visit to Toronto next month, although he said no plans have been made.
Bromwell was reacting to the city’s mayor, Mel Lastman, calling for a wage freeze for city workers which has created labour unrest that Bromwell said could jeopardize Toronto’s 2008 Olympic bid.
“If they want the Olympics, you think he would want everyone working together. This has thrown a real monkey wrench into it”, said Bromwell.
He added that the city’s Olympic bid depends on the International Olympic Committee being comfortable with the level of security the city can deliver. Potential labour problems between the force and city could spell trouble for Toronto’s bid.
