NYC2012, the committee leading New York’s bid for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, announced Wednesday that its Circle of Olympians and Paralympians has surpassed 1,500 members. The Circle consists of Olympic and Paralympic athletes from all 50 states and 29 countries who support and are actively involved in New York’s 2012 bid.
Wendy Hilliard, Director of Sports at NYC2012 said, “as the bid advances into the Candidate City phase, we are fortunate to have over 1,500 Olympians and Paralympians on board who are as eager as we are about bringing the Olympic Games to New York in 2012. Their support and expertise are invaluable and bring a unique perspective to our proposed Games – athlete-centered Games”.
The United States Olympians Association, through its President Olympian John Naber, also expressed support for New York’s bid.
He said, “on behalf of all U.S. Olympians, we are strongly in favour of bringing the 2012 Games to New York. NYC2012 is doing everything in its power to involve the Olympians’ point of view and putting them at the centre of every deliberation. As a body we are proud and eager to support this bid”.
