Rio 2012 To Get New Olympic Stadium

The cornerstone was recently laid for a new Olympic stadium should Rio de Janeiro be selected host city for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games.

The stadium will house up to 45,000 spectators and should be completed by 2005. The 2007 Pan American Games will inaugurate the new stadium.

The President of Brazil’s Olympic Committee called the planned stadium the most modern stadium in all of Latin America.

Construction will cost 50-million euros.

Track and field and the soccer tournament will take place at the new stadium. The opening and closing ceremonies will be at the Marcana football stadium.
