After being narrowly defeated twice in consecutive attempts – the city of PyeongChang, South Korea has announced that it will try again with a bid for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games.
Governor Jin-sun Kim made the announcement at a press conference in South Korea on Monday.
He said “Citizens in Gangwon Province and people in Korea still have a strong desire for the Olympics in their hearts. The Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in PyeongChang is indeed the kindling of our dream. By optimizing well-prepared conditions and accumulated experiences, and with the improvement of infrastructure in venues and transportation as well as the successful host of international sporting events and the constructive development of the Dream Program, PyeongChang will increase the competence in a race for the 2018 Olympic Winter Games”.
A survey conducted by national broadcaster SBS just days after PyeongChang lost the 2014 bid showed that 87.7% of Korean and 77.3% of Gangwon residents are in favor of another bid for the Olympics.
PyeongChang was defeated in the final round by Vancouver in the 2010 bid and then again in the final round to Sochi, Russia in the 2014 bid.
