Newspaper Says IOC Members Mute On 2008 Choice

The Toronto Star attempted to contact all the members of the International Olympic Committee voting for a 2008 host city for the Summer Olympics, but only 52 responded.

The results showed that the respondents think highly of the compact plan Toronto has put forward for 2008 and that they have no doubts the city is up to the challenge. But most refused to commit themselves to voting for any particular city. And a large number said they’ll wait until they see Friday’s presentations from all five bid cities before deciding who to vote for.

The Star said it appeared to be a mixed bag. For every member who seemed openly supportive of the city’s bid, there were others who refused to answer questions about the 2008 campaign or who said nice things about all the bid cities.

They appear to think highly of Toronto’s Olympic bid. But there’s no indication that the city will get the votes to match.

When asked about the IOC presidency, Dick Pound was rated highly, and the IOC members said their jobs would be easier if they could visit cities bidding for the Games.
