Government To Provide Financial Support For PyeongChang 2014

The Korea Times reports the government plans to set aside about 50 billion won to help reconstruct winter sports facilities damaged by heavy rain last month for PyeongChang in Gangwon Province.

Members of the National Assembly’s Special Committee for PyeongChang 2014 showed its commitment Monday to bringing the 2014 Winter Olympic Games to PyeongChang by reaching an agreement to support necessary measures in preparation of the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Evaluation Commission visit in February.

According to the agreement every necessary action will be taken to ensure that PyeongChang 2014 related infrastructure is recovered ahead of the IOC’s visit. Venues and resort facilities will be restored by the end of October and access to roads by the end of December.

Construction to improve the provincial road No. 59 between PyeongChang and JungBong, the downhill venue, is underway as scheduled.

Kim Myung-gon, Minister of Culture and Tourism, said his ministry would begin a campaign to promote PyeongChang as the host city for the 2014 Games, in cooperation with private and state-funded firms such as the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency.
