Decision Delayed On Munich 2014 Winter Bid

The German Olympic Committee has delayed a decision on whether Munich should bid for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, reports the Associated Press.

The national Olympic committee told Munich officials Thursday to prepare a more detailed bid to prove it can host an Olympic Games. Following Leipzig’s failure to be short listed for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, German Olympic Committee president Klaus Steinbach said although Munich appears to be an attractive candidate, he wants to make sure that it has a long term strategy plan and clear commitments from politicians, business leaders and the public. One committee member even suggested that they should lend their support to Salzburg.

The Associated Press reports that Interior Minister Otto Schily, who is also responsible for sports, said he would meet with German Olympic head Steinbach and top Munich officials to discuss the potential bid.

Steinbach criticized Munich for presenting a single sheet of paper at the NOC meeting. He said, “an idea can only be serious when we have more than a letter of intent”.
