Qatar To Bid For 2020 Summer Games

Following a failed bid for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, Qatar is now attempting to stage the 2020 Games, the country’s national Olympic committee said Thursday.

Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, president of the Qatar Olympic Committee, said that his country is still determined to host the Olympic Games, reports Middle East Online.

A statement on the Qatar Olympic Committee website said, “his Highness said that Qatar will speak with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) about the obstacles (to) Dona’s bid for hosting the 2016 Olympic Games. Following such discussions and resolution of the obstacles with the IOC Executive Council, Qatar will bid for the 2020 Olympic Games according to the new criteria”.

The Heir Apparent said following the hoisting of the Qatari flag at the Olympic Village Wednesday, organizing such an event would have a positive impact on the people of Qatar and the people of the region as a whole, citing the successful organization of the 2006 Doha Asian Games.
