Paris Bid Head Says IOC Shouldn’t Deal With China

Claude Bebear, head of the Paris 2008 Olympic bid, says the IOC shouldn’t be dealing with the Chinese. Quoting former U.S. President John Kennedy, Bebear said, “you can do business with anybody, but you can play only with gentlemen”.

In an interview in the French sports daily L’Equipe, Bebear says a close read of the Olympic charter finds a reference to human rights “on nearly every line. The question of ethics is fundamental”, he says. The second paragraph of the charter says Olympism “seeks to create a way of life based on the joy found in effort, the educational value of good example, and respect for universal fundamental ethical principles”.

The third section of the Charter talks about “encouraging the establishment of a peaceful society concerned with the preservation of human dignity”.

Bebear also cited “political uncertainly” in China and pollution in Beijing.

Bob Richardson, COO of Toronto’s Olympic bid, said, “we haven’t focused on politics. We have focused and will continue to focus on sport and athletes. We think that’s our strength”.

Bebear faces a money-laundering investigation in his role as chief executive of French insurance group Axa, and said he would have resigned as head of Paris’ Olympic bid committee if he had been asked. “I told them that if my presence had become negative for Paris, then I would leave”, he said. But he doesn’t think the money-laundering probe will hurt Paris’ candidacy.

Meanwhile, Paris is getting into the Olympic mood. The Champs Elysees and bridges over the Seine are decked out in the colours of the Paris bid this week-end as part of International Olympic Day.
