Buyer beware. A consumer protection magazine has launched a website warning people about the many Olympics-related scam websites, reports Computer Weekly. The website, created with the knowledge of the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games Organizing Committee, says that Olympic tickets are not for sale and gives visitors to the site information on where to buy legitimate tickets and to report any potential scams. According to the site criminals could sell fake Olympic tickets, steal personal and financial details, and commit identity fraud using websites like the one it has set up. Computing editor Sarah Kidner said, “criminals are limbering up for a spate of Olympic-related crime. Several websites are already promising tickets that don’t exist. There needs to be much stronger regulation of this area to stop con men running off with our money”.

Brazil’s Minister of Justice Tarso Genro said Rio will receive 131.8 million reais ($75.8 million) to make the city safer for the 2016 Summer Games. He told reporters, “if the current level of public security investment continues as it is, we will not end up with a satisfactory situation. As such, we have to triple the rhythm of work and necessary investment to improve public security and in 2016 we will be prepared”. The money will purchase police equipment and improve state prisons. Meanwhile Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said Wednesday Brazil will thrive when hosting a safe 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. He said he would take “care” to see Rio clean up its violent image before the Games.
