A YouGov poll has revealed that 69 per cent of the UK believe that staging the 2018 Youth Games in Glasgow would continue to inspire a generation of young people beyond London 2012.
The results of the poll were revealed as Glasgow 2018’s young champions Mahad Ahmed and Jasmine Main flew to Lausanne Friday to deliver the candidature file to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in time for Monday’s deadline.
The poll also showed that 62 per cent of those asked supported the bid, with that figure rising to 68 per cent in Scotland. Also 68 per cent of Scots believe staging the Youth Games would continue to inspire young people to become more involved in sport and physical activity.
The candidature file is the key document that outlines venues, legacies, financial committments and other important elements of Games planning. These will be filed by all bids and reviewed in a report to be delivered to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) members next May prior to the July 2013 election of the host city.
Councillor Gordon Matheson, leader of Glasgow City Council said, “our submission to host the 2018 Youth Olympic Games is a compelling one, and it clearly has the support of people across the UK”.
He added, “we have a once in a lifetime opportunity to continue the UK’s Olympic journey, building on the undoubted success of London 2012 and of course our own plans for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. Hosting the 2018 Youth Olympic Games would allow us to take that journey to the next stage and leave a lasting legacy for future generations”.
Glasgow is competing against Buenos Aires, Medellin, Guadalajara and Rotterdam to earn the right to host the Games.
