The U-Sports Intelligent System is in operation at the YongPyong ski resort in PyeongChang South Korea. According to a media release the system is named after the word “Ubiquitous” which combines high technology and equipment, RFID technology and USN (Ubiquitous Sensor Network).
Jin-sun Kim, Governor of Gangwon Province where PyeongChang is located said, “with the establishment of U-Sport Intelligent System, skiers in PeyongChang are able to enjoy skiing in safe hands. Intensive care for safety and security for the skiers and its proper measures are ready to be applied in time. We will ensure to make this customized service available in every ski resort and venues for PyeongChang’s 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, maximizing the users’ convenience and safety”.
The system will provide real-time information on items such as direction and velocity of wind. Also, games’ scores for each competition will be achievable through the use of RFID tag-embedded tickets.
The media release says that security should be increased with reports of any accidents being received more quickly.
Meanwhile Gangneung, which would be the venue for ice sports should PyeongChang host the 2018 Winter Games, is hosting the ISU Short Track Speed Skating World Championships from March 7 to 9. Around 238 athletes from 32 countries worldwide are expected to take part.
There will be competitions in 500, 1000 and 3000 metre races, and a relay race of 3000 metres for ladies and 5000 metres for men.
Kim said, “Gangwon Province has successfully hosted IPC World Cup Skiing, Snowboard World Cup and Biathlon World Cup during this winter season. We also spare no efforts to bring the world skaters’ festival – ISU Short Track Speed Skating Championships – into a great success with the delicate preparation. We will not sit on our laurels, however. Gangwon Province will make sure to prepare everything for the great success of Snowboard World Championships and Biathlon World Championships next year, strengthening its position as the hub of the world’s winter sports”.
