Huge Screen in Munich's Marienplatz Will Display Live Bid Announcement To Thousands of Fans

The Munich 2018 Olympic bid committee has scheduled an event to be held in the city when the International Olympic Committee is expected to announce a short-list of candidate cities that have qualified to host the Games.

Bid CEO Will Bogner said “I invite everyone to join us at the Marienplatz on Tuesday in anticipation of the IOC’s decision. If we become a Candidate City, we want to celebrate with all the friendliness and enthusiasm that makes our region so special.”

The venue will feature a “huge” screen on which the thousands of anticipated fans can watch the announcement live from Lausanne, Switzerland. There will be movies, trailers and live music – as well as comments from Bogner and other officials.

Other speakers will include the mayor of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Thomas Schmid; three-time Olympic champion Georg Hackl and other sports ambassadors. It is also expected that the German national soccer team will send their congratulations from the World Cup in South Africa should Munich make the cut.

“This is an exciting time for the Munich 2018 Bid Committee, and for the whole region. Now is the time for us to demonstrate our passion for winter sports that has made Germany one of the most successful winter sports nations ever, and to show that traditional strongholds like Bavaria remain the lifeblood of the winter sports movement,” said Bogner.

Annecy in France and PyeongChang in South Korea are also in the hunt for spots on the short-list; an evaluation report based on an initial application questionnaire will score each bid on a scale, then the IOC Executive Committee will recommend which ones will move forward to the next round.

Because there are only three applicants – the lowest number in several years – it is widely expected that all three candidates will be selected. The announcement will be at 1:30pm local time in Lausanne.
