Zhangjiakou Wants 2022 Winter Bid With Beijing

Zhangjiakou, in North China’s Hebei province, hopes to bid jointly with Beijing for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, the Zhangjiakou government said at a conference on Sunday.

Zhangjiakou is now working with Beijing on questionnaires that will be submitted to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) by March 14, 2014.

If the bid is successful Zhangjiakou will primarily host the snow sports events and Beijing will host the ice events.

The city has also built four ski resorts with 82 trails. The length of the trails reach 69 km.

An express railway, 174 km long, linking the two cities, is expected to be completed in 2017, local officials said Monday. Trains will take only 40 minutes to run from Zhangjiakou. The travel time between the two cities now is four or five hours.

By 2020 Zhangjiakou is expected to have more than 20 star-rated hotels that will accommodate more than 20,000 tourists a day.
