President Viktor Yanukovych announced Thursday that Ukraine, which is co-hosting the 2012 European Football Championships in less than two months, wants to bid for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games.
AFP reports Yanukovych said feasibility studies are being conducted in the west of the country by an Austrian company “with great experience of Winter Olympics projects”.
The Ukrainian Journal reports Ukraine’s west is home to the Carpathian Mountains, reaching up to 2,000 metres (6,500 feet), and already has a handful of Alpine skiing resorts, but infrastructure is still quite limited.
