Ria Novosti reports that Ukraine may put in a joint bid for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games with neighbours Poland and Slovakia, President Viktor Yanukovych said Friday.
Yanukovych said, “we are starting these negotiations. There’s such a thing as a three-way play. Ukraine would find it tough to go it alone”.
He said it would be difficult for Ukraine to go it alone because the country still has debts incurred by the Euro 2012 football tournament.
Previously Poland and Slovakia have declared an interest in a two-way bid to hold the Games in the Polish resort of Zakopane near Krakow, and Poprad in Slovakia, with the Tatra Mountains spanning both locales.
The City of Lviv in Ukraine could serve as a Games base that would host the skating events, reports Ria Novosti.
Deadline for bids to be submitted to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is November 14, and the host city for the 2022 Winter Games will be announced in the summer of 2015.
