International Olympic Committee (IOC) member Prince Albert 11 of Monaco has changed his wedding date next July because it coincides with the IOC meeting July 5 to 9 in Durban, South Africa, when the host city for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games will be elected.
According to AFP, Prince Albert announced in June he planned to marry South African swimming champ Charlene Wittstock on July 6, but the Prince, who has been a member of the IOC since 1985, decided to get married a week early on July 2 so as not to miss the IOC meeting.
The palace said Albert plans to make the Durban jaunt into an African honeymoon.
A statement says, “the couple wanted to have the Olympic family around them. The prince also wanted the princess’ first foreign trip to be to her homeland, South Africa”.
Annecy, Munich and PyeongChang are bidding to host the 2018 Winter Games.
