Durban’s communications department says some journalists have misunderstood a media release on the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) evaluation commission’s recent visit to the city, which said the commission was weighing up whether Durban or Hong Kong should host the IOC’s 123rd congress in 2011.
According to a South African website the release said the 2011 meeting would decide “which city will host the 2018 Winter Olympics. Some media reports misconstrued the latter statement as meaning that the IOC had come to Durban to inspect the city’s readiness for the 2018 Winter Olympics”, said the communications department. “For the record, this is not the case”.
Durban’s winter temperatures reportedly average 20 degrees Celsius.
