Tokyo 2016 revealed its Candidature File Friday. The concept of the bid, Setting the Stage for Heroes, is, according to a press release, a blueprint for the guaranteed delivery of an “extraordinary” Olympic and Paralympic Games with major benefits for the Olympic Movement – even during a global recession.
Tokyo 2016 calls its bid the most compact and sustainable Games plan ever by hosting the Games at the very heart of the city.
There are 17 themes in the more than 550-page Candidature File in which Tokyo 2016 says it focuses on minimizing the effect of the global economic downturn while maximizing Tokyo’s “incredible” assets to build a stage fit for Olympic and Paralympic heroes.
Governor of Tokyo and President of Tokyo 2016 Shintaro Ishihara said, “the Olympic and Paralympic Games are all about heroes. Tokyo 2016 is committed to setting the stage for heroes by combining a world-class Games plan with incredible city infrastructure and an enthusiastic sport-loving population.
“On this unique stage athletes can achieve their very best performances, inspiring billions of people across the world and reuniting youth through sport. Tokyo 2016 will use all our exceptional assets to set the best possible stage for heroic achievements in 2016”.
Tokyo 2016 CEO Dr. Ichiro Kono said, “in these troubled economic times the Olympic Movement can be 100 per cent assured that the Tokyo 2016 Games will be exactly as described in our Candidature File. Most of our venues are in place, most of the Games infrastructure is in place, the USD 4.4 billion maximum budget to complete these tasks is already in the bank and we believe Tokyo 2016 could break prime-time viewing records, reaching three billion consumers within a three hour time zone”.
The bid has also budgeted over USD 2.8 billion for Games-related expenses.
