Tokyo 2016 CEO Refutes Reports On Public Support

Dr. Ichiro Kono, Chairman and CEO of Tokyo 2016, called reports that Tokyo was getting scant support from its residents, “erroneous”.

He told GamesBids.com, “Japanese support for hosting a unique compact 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games at the heart of our vibrant capital city is currently over 70 per cent and rising every day. Any contrasting figures are completely at odds with two independent studies from the Japan Association for Public Opinion Research reported by Kyodo Newsire as 70 per cant and Yomiuri Shimbun’s study at 72 per cent that confirm that more than 90 million people back our bid. The latest independent study was conducted only a month ago”.

In a statement to GamesBids.com Kono added, “Japanese people are inspired by sport and are absolutely passionate supporters of the Olympic Movement. The Beijing 2008 Games and a series of exciting new national marketing initiatives will see this solid support base for Tokyo 2016 only go up over the coming months.

“There is still a long way to go and I am confident the official IOC survey further down the line will prove that support for the Games at the heart of city life is strong, convincing and passionate”.
