The Tokyo 2016 Parliamentary Caucus was formed at a meeting December 19 to support Tokyo’s bid for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.
The group, consisting of 200 legislators from Japan’s House of Representatives and House of Councillors, is non-partisan.
According to a press release Ryu Shionoya, Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, highlighted the national government’s support for the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s backing of the Games.
It was agreed that both Houses of Parliament would vote on a resolution to formally support the bid in January 2009.
Attending the meeting were former Prime Minister and Chairman of the Tokyo 2016 Parliamentarian Caucus, who spoke at the meeting, as well as Shintaro Ishihara, Governor of Tokyo and President of Tokyo 2016 and Olympic medallists.
