The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) has approved the proposed facilities for table tennis in Rio de Janeiro’s bid for the 2016 Summer Games. Competitions will be held at Riocentro, host of the 2007 Pan American Games table tennis competitions.
Jordi Serra, executive director of the table tennis federation, said in a statement to the Rio 2016 bid committee, “the proposed facilities fulfill table tennis standards and have been approved, should Rio de Janeiro be chosen to host the 2016 Olympic Games”.
The table tennis competitions would be held at pavilion 3 in Riocentro, a large convention centre with the capacity for 5,000 spectators.
Carlos Arthur Nuzman, Rio 2016’s bid president said, “the Riocentro complex was much used during the 2007 Rio Pan American Games. The ITTF approval shows that the investment and modernization of the facilities for the Pan American Games made the place suitable for large-scale competitions”.
