According to a survey reported Tuesday in the Nepszabadsag daily, 70 per cent of Hungarians say they want Budapest to be for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games while three quarters say that hosting the Games would be an historic achievement.
The survey by Szonda Ipsos shows that more than half of respondents said that hosting the Games would help foster national unity.
Asked if they would be prepared to pay a tax to support the bid, 53 per cent said yes, 38 per cent said no and nine per cent were unsure or didn’t say.
A Hungarian website reports the municipality of Budapest strongly supports a plan presented by Parliament’s sports committee last December to draw up a bill preparing for the bid. The issue is expected to appear on the agenda of the new Parliament.
Hungary’s new president is a former Olympic fencing champion and was the head of the country’s Olympic Committee.
