Four months ahead of the final decision as to the host city for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games will be, Madrid 2016 officials said in a press release that the number of volunteers signed up to actively support the bid has broken through the 35,000 mark and Madrid’s volunteers are already active.
Madrid reportedly has strong support from all levels of society, including the Royal Family, Spanish parliament, sporting federations, and corporate backing in the form of 65 confirmed sponsors and 85 per cent of residents in favour of Madrid’s bid.
Also the Executive Committee of the European Olympic Committees (EOC) recently approved a unanimous declaration of support for Madrid’s bid and called for other members of the Assembly to come forward to support the bid.
Madrid 2016 CEO Mercedes Coghen said, “we have been overwhelmed by the incredible support from our own country and around the world and it shows no signs of slowing down. Volunteers are too important to our bid and it would not be possible without their support. This new figure demonstrates the level of passion of our people and how much they want the Games. Our people will welcome athletes and visitors in 2016 and will help to make 2016 the Games with the Human Touch”.
