According to a new poll just released, more than 90 per cent of Spaniards want Madrid to host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games and more than two-thirds or 68 per cent are confident the country will be successful in winning the bid.
Reacting to the poll Mercedes Coghen, head of Madrid 2016 said, “our campaign for Madrid 2016 is gathering momentum. These figures of public support are phenomenal and show without a doubt just how much Spain wants these Games and how popular they would be. We are passionate people, committed to the ideals of modern sport. 2016 presents a fantastic opportunity for Madrid, Spain and the Olympic Games in general.
When asked if the Games will unquestionably be of a lasting benefit to Madrid, 95 per cent of respondents said yes, and to Spain, 85 per cent said yes. Between a third and two-thirds of Spaniards said they would “definitely” or “probably” visit Madrid during the Games and one in four said they would definitely attend a sporting event.
More than 80 per cent of Spaniards cited Madrid’s facilities, infrastructure, passion, dedication and organization as all having a role in the potential success of the Games being held in Madrid.
