Madrid 2016 – More Support, Popular Race

The Executive Committee of the European Olympic Committees (EOC) has declared its full support for Madrid’s 2016 Summer Olympic Games bid.

The committee, of which Alejandro Blanco, President of the Spanish Olympic Committee is a member, unanimously approved a declaration of support for Madrid’s 2016 bid.

The Executive Committee is calling for other members of the Assembly to come forward in support of Madrid’s bid.

Mercedes Coghen, head of Madrid 2016 said, “this declaration expresses the absolute support of the European Olympic Movement for Madrid to realize its Olympic aspirations. This is a very important group for Madrid and together we will work hard to bring the 2016 Games to Europe”.

Meanwhile, the City of Madrid is celebrating sport for everyone with the second annual Popular Liberty Seguros Race in which non-disabled athletes and enthusiasts take part alongside those with disabilities.

The race is being held May 31 and 10,000 citizens of all backgrounds and sporting ability are expected to take part. The number of participants has doubled from last year’s event.

Organizers of the race have joined forces with Coghen, Miguel Carballeda, President of the Spanish Paralympic Committee, and the Mayor of Madrid Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon, to raise awareness of Madrid’s dedication to achieve social integration through sport.

This year five competition races have been added for children ages four to 13.

On hand to show their support for the initiative will be two of Spain’s gold medal winning athletes, Chema Martinez and Paralympic Gold Medal winner for swimming, Ehamed Mohamed.
