H.M. the Queen of Spain said Tuesday during her visit to the House of Spain in Beijing that she supports Madrid’s bid for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.
Her Majesty said, “we will see, in the future and even if we have tough rivals, if Madrid can be awarded the 2016 Olympic Games. We are going to work for it. People are getting informed about the bid and there is already lots of support from them. Yes, we are really involved in it”.
Her Majesty, along with Juan Antonio Samaranch, Honorary President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Jaime Lissavetzky, Secretary of State for Sports, and Mercedes Coghen, Madrid 2016 CEO, spoke to more than 20 members of the IOC who attended an official reception ceremony at the House of Spain.
Meanwhile Li Ning of China, triple Olympic champion in gymnastics who lit the cauldron of the Beijing Games during the Opening Ceremony, said earlier this week, “I support Madrid and I hope the city will host the Olympic Games in 2016”.
Li spoke during a visit to the House of Spain where he discussed the bid with Coghen and Antonio Fernandez Arimany, Managing Director of Madrid 2016.
