Thousands of runners completed the 32nd Madrid Marathon Sunday, which this year highlighted the green credentials and sporting passion of Spain’s capital city, said a Madrid 2016 press release.
In line with the Madrid 2016 bid to be the “Happy Green Games”, the theme for the marathon this year was environmentally friendly practice.
Runners, spectators and organizers received information on how to be “green” prior to the marathon. Environmental studies of the route were carried out and organizers ensured environmentally friendly cleaning and maintenance of the circuit, shows and WCs.
There were more than 500 volunteers at the event. A “Green Team” of volunteers ensured the recycling of all materials used throughout the day and other volunteers ensured the smooth running of Sunday’s event by taking charge of a range of important duties from the start to finish, said the press release.
