A formal plan is reportedly being worked on for Ahmadabad, India to bid for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games. International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach is scheduled to be in India next month for an official visit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but there are reports that hosting the Games in 2024 will consume part of the discussion between the two.
Sources confirmed to The Tribune in India that Sports Secretary Ajit Mohan Sharan has already held discussions with key IOC officials in this regard.
However The Tribune also reports that the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) secretary general, Rajeev Mehta denied knowledge of any such discussions or plans. The IOA is ultimately responsible for preparing any Indian applications to host the Games.
Ahmadabad is the 5th largest city in India with a population of over 5 million.
India was widely criticized for construction delays and alleged corruption when it organized its last major event, the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.
Other cities that have already announced bids the 2024 Games include Rome, Hamburg and Boston. The deadline for the IOA and other National Olympic Committees to submit the names of their Applicant Cities to the IOC is September 15, 2015.
The host city for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games will be announced during the 130th IOC Session in Lima, Peru in 2017.
