Support For Netherlands 2028 Bid Plummets

Radio Netherlands reports that support among the Dutch to host the 2028 Olympic Games has plummeted due to issues including economic worries.

Support among the Dutch population for a 2028 bid is reportedly down from 41 to 30 per cent.

It seems that MPs are irritated by the government’s failure to inform them that hosting the 2028 Games could cost as much as eight billion euros and are demanding an explanation, and question whether a 2028 Games could be paid for.

Geert van Maanen, permanent secretary for the sports ministry said, “it’s not possible to say what it’s going to cost because there’s simply no plan ready on which the figures can be based”.

Olympic Fire Committee chair and former minister Camiel Eurlings believes that the cost of a bid can be kept to a minimum and is confident the Games will make a profit. He said, “we’re going to achieve positive economic value with the Olympic bid. Let’s be real: why should we be the first country – since Communist Moscow in 1980 – that fails to earn money from the Olympic Games? I refuse to accept that”.

The Netherland have to decide by 2016 whether it should bid for the Olympic Games and whether Amsterdam or Rotterdam would be its candidate.
