Sportspress Northwest reports that the Seattle Sports Commission has begun to informally explore the possibility of bidding for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games.
Ralph Morton, executive director of the commission said, “it’s not a bid, it’s just an opportunity for us to consider whether we want to be considered”.
Seattle was one of 35 states approached in February by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) searching for cities interested in bidding for the 2024 Games.
Morton said, “right now we are waiting to hear back from them. We’re interested in hearing more and finding out about the journey”.
Morton stressed that Seattle’s interest in a potential Olympic bid does not mean it will actively pursue a bid, only that Seattle is agreeable to discussing what such a pursuit would require.
It’s the second time that Seattle expressed an interest in becoming a U.S. bid city for the Summer Games. A Seattle bid committee raised nearly $500,000 privately between 2001-2006 for a 2012 Games bid, which London hosted. But the Seattle City Council refused to allow the committee to proceed.
The IOC will vote on the 2024 Games in 2017.
