Russia won’t be bidding for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in the near future, said Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko. It had been anticipated that St. Petersburg would be Russia’s candidate for the 2024 Games.
Just hours before the Opening Ceremony of the Sochi Winter Games Mutko said Russia has enough on its plate with the 2018 football World Cup and the 2019 University Games in Krasnoyarsk.
According to RIA Novosti, Mutko said, “there is no talk of a bid for a new Olympics at the moment. We are all busy until 2019 in the good sense of the word, we have so many major events in the country”.
Georgy Poltavchenko, Mayor of St. Petersburg, said in October that serious consideration was being given to a prospective bid.
