Joint Seoul-Pyongyang 2032 Olympic Bid To Be Pitched By South Korea

Sports officials in South Korea will reportedly pitch a joint 2032 Olympic Games bid to its North Korean Neighbours next week during the inter-Korean Summit.

South Korean Sport Minister Do Jong-Hwan told local media Wednesday during a meeting in Tokyo “I plan to make this proposal to the North for the settlement of peace.”

“Seoul and Pyongyang would co-host the Games.”

The idea was inspired by North Korea’s last minute inclusion at February’s PyeongChang Winter Olympics, and the historic joint Korean Women’s ice hockey team that was seen as a positive step towards easing tensions on the peninsula.

Both Korea’s marched into the Olympic Stadium under a single unified flag.

“The PyeongChang Winter Olympics showed the Olympic values very well.” Do added.

“I hope peace in Northeast Asia can continue through sports.”

Do is also exploring a possible pan-Asian bid to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup involving both Koreas, China and Japan.

Seoul hosted the 1988 Summer Games, an event that has been considered a great catalyst for major economic and cultural change in South Korea.  North Korea has never bid for the Games.

Paris is organizing the Olympics in 2024 and Los Angeles has already agreed to host in 2028 after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) awarded both cities the Games with a single vote.  The early awarding of the latter event has forced new interested cities to wait until 2032, and they are already lining up.

Indonesia’s President Confirms Nation’s Bid To Host 2032 Olympic Games

Indonesian officials last week announced that they’ll begin to prepare Jakarta for a 2032 bid after a successful Asian Games this year.

Earlier, Shanghai’s deputy director Luo Wenhua announced that the Chinese city could consider a 2032 bid while it sets a course to become a “globally famous” sport city.

Other interest in bidding for the 2032 Games has come from Queensland in Australia, India, Germany, Russia and Egypt.  The IOC indicated earlier this year that it has had discussions with at least one interested city and that the “discussion phase” of the cycle has begun.

The IOC is scheduled to elect the 2032 host city in 2025.
