JOC Wary Over South Africa's 2020 Summer Games Bid

Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) President Tsunekazu Takeda was wary Wednesday after South Africa announced it would bid to host the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.

Kyodo quotes Takeda saying “we kind of had expected this, but South Africa is definitely a strong contender nevertheless. We need to carefully analyze how and in which city South Africa is planning to host the Olympics”.

The cities of Tokyo and Hiroshima are considering bidding for the 2020 Games. Tokyo lost its bid for the 2016 Olympics to Rio de Janeiro.

JOC Secretary General Noriyuki Ichihara said, “just as Rio won the right for it being the first South American city to host the Olympics, a favourable wind may blow to the continent of Africa”.

Rome has already announced its bid for the 2020 Games. The host city will be decided in 2013.
