Any hopes of Hiroshima bidding for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games were dashed Thursday when the Hiroshima City Council rejected city office budgets needed for its bid.
Japan Today reports that a motion to omit the 25.69 million yen for formulating the basic plan, running an exploratory committee, and covering other costs to host the Olympics from the city’s fiscal 2010 budget bill, passed the special budget comprising all 54 council members.
The motion, submitted Tuesday on the basis that the cash-strapped city can hardly host the Olympics amid a dearth of local public support, is now expected to clear a plenary session Friday, reports Japan Today.
