According to a recent survey by the Emnid Institute, 59 per cent of Hamburg citizens would like the city to host the Summer Olympic Games, 37 per cent were against a bid, and 77 per cent of respondents thought a bid could improve Hamburg’s reputation as a world city.
According to statements by Olaf Scholz, Mayor of Hamburg, in the newspaper Hamburger Abendblatt, the city should once again develop courage to tackle big projects.
Fritz Horst Melsheimer, President of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce, said, “Mr. Mayor, I take you at your word – pack it in”.
Melsheimer said that Hamburg should set an example for sustainable and modern Games of the 21st century, adding “you would bring the sport and the city moving forward”
Interior and Sport Senator Michael Neumann said that in his opinion Hamburg is still enthusiastic for the Olympics and that they need to bring the sports infrastructure in order.
Last November Hamburg pulled back from a possible bid for the 2024 Summer Games following a clear “no” in a referendum held on Munich’s bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics.
