The German Olympic Sports Federation (DOSB) voted unanimously Saturday at a general meeting in Dresden to bid for either the 2024 or 2028 Summer Olympic Games.
All 456 members present at the meeting voted in favour of starting the process to launch a bid , and a decision on whether Hamburg or Berlin would be the candidate will be made at an extraordinary general meeting in March 2015.
A referendum is to be held in the relevant city so the general public can have a say as to whether they want to host an Olympics, which is a pre-requisite for a bid.
An application must be submitted to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) by January 8, 2016 and the host city for the 2024 Summer Games will be announced in 2017.
If the DSOB fails in its bid for the 2024 Games, an application would be submitted to host the 2028 Summer Games.
