The Tokyo 2020 bid team returned from SportAccord in Quebec City and wasted no time to mark an important milestone.
The bid was voted on to the short list by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) which earned the bid the title of “Candidate City” and the right to adorn the Olympic Rings on the campaign logo. The logo was revealed Tuesday in Tokyo.
Tokyo 2020 President Tsunekazu Takeda said “After a truly amazing experience in Quebec City, it now is a wonderful feeling to share the honour and excitement of Tokyo’s Candidate City selection with the entire nation.”
The IOC’s approval of our Candidate City Emblem is a symbolic milestone in our journey to host the 2020 Games and deliver an unforgettable Games plan fully integrated with Tokyo, its people and their future.”
Athletes from the Japanese Olympic Committee were on hand to reveal the revised logo, an arrangement of cherry blossoms with the five joined Olympic rings below.
Tokyo, Istanbul and Madrid qualified for the short list and are now expected to submit their bid books, complete dossiers of their Olympic plans, to the IOC by January 2013.
