Rome 2020 Olympic Bid Questionable

With the application deadline quickly approaching, Rome’s bid for the 2020 Olympic Games is looking more doubtful. A proposed meeting between bid officials and Italian Prime Minister Monti didn’t materialize Monday and a possible meeting Tuesday morning is still in question.

The bid has until Wednesday to gain the Prime Minister’s approval and financial backing – the day of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) application deadline. Monti told the Italian press that the decision was “difficult” and he questioned the financial data given to him. He may seek advice from Italy’s President.

Monti just returned from the United States after talks with President Obama; Italy is mired in a financial crisis.

Media reports are mixed about the possibility of a Tuesday morning meeting with the Prime Minister to further address any concerns. Rome’s bid rivals Doha, Baku and Tokyo have already submitted completed applications with the necessary government endorsements; Istanbul and Madrid are expected to follow suit by Wednesday.

Rome was first to declare it’s candidacy for the 2020 Olympic Games while campaigning for the domestic nomination two years ago. Once considered the frontrunner, Rome has fallen behind the other cities – most of which have already launched aggressive marketing campaigns.
