Radioactive Leak Won't Affect Tokyo 2020 – Tokyo Governor

AFP reports Tokyo Governor Naoki Inose saying Friday that a leak of highly radioactive water at the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant won’t affect Tokyo’s bid for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games. The city is bidding against Istanbul and Madrid to host the Games.

About 80,000 gallons of contaminated water leaked from one of the tanks Monday at the wrecked Fukushima Dai-ichi plant. It’s reportedly the fifth and worst since last year. Fukushima is 250 km. north of Tokyo.

Inose said “regarding food and water in Tokyo, there is absolute safety and the data is available. As far as hosting the Games, the situation in Fukushima will not affect Tokyo”.

Inose added data shows that radiation levels in Tokyo are the same as London, Paris and New York.

Japan is pledging tighter nuclear safety. Most of Japan’s nuclear plants remain closed after they were shut down for safety checks following the Fukushima disaster.
