Madrid Mayor to officially launch 2020 Olympic bid Monday

On Monday, Madrid Mayor Ana Botella along with Spanish Olympic Committee President Alejandro Blanco will officially launch Madrid’s candidacy to host the 2020 Olympic Games. During a formal presentation at the Spanish Olympic Committee headquarters, the bid’s Web site, logo and team will be officially revealed to the public.

This will be Spain’s fifth consecutive bid with Madrid having already campaigned for the 2012 and 2016 Games and Seville’s unsuccessful push for the Games in 2004 and 2008. Madrid also bid for the Games in 1972.

Despite a hard-hit Spanish economy and the bid’s decision to cut it’s budget by 40% compared to its spending for the 2016 campaign, Madrid 2020 will push forward after receiving critical government backing last month.

The bid will gear up just in time to submit an important initial application to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) by the February 15 deadline. So far Tokyo and Baku in Azerbaijan have created branding and a Web site; Doha, Rome and Istanbul are also in the running.

The presentation is scheduled to take place 11:00 local time.
