Madrid 2020 Optimistic About Bid

One month to go before the election of the host city for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games, Alejandro Blanco, President of Madrid 2020, feels there is a sense of optimism in the air. He said “the most important thing is for us to be relaxed. We know this is a very tough match, but we also know we have a great bid.

“We have just enjoyed a hugely successful FINA World Championships where our country has once again demonstrated its superb organizational skills and the people of Spain have shown their passion for sport events and their commitment to them”.

He added, “the entire bid team is doing a fantastic job, one that the IOC has described as ‘extraordinary’, and in the run-up to September 7 we will be explaining the project again and looking for collaboration and support. All we can do in the countdown to the big day is to keep on working. Madrid is ready to stage the Games. That is the big message our bid has been able to get across.

HRH Prince Felipe, Honorary President of Madrid 2020 said, “Madrid has a magnificent opportunity to secure victory and its chances of success represented an opportunity for the Olympic movement as a whole. I have a really good feeling”.

Madrid Mayor Ana Botella, speaking at an event presenting the city’s bid, said that since the dossier of Madrid’s candidacy was presented 19 months ago, “popular support has steadily risen” and more than 45,000 volunteers have signed up to work on the Olympic project.

To mark the countdown to September 7, Madrid City Council presented Wednesday a scale model of the project on display at the “CentroCentro” Gallery, inviting all citizens to come and get a closer view of Madrid’s “Olympic Dream”.
