Sir Craig Reedie, International Olympic Committee (IOC) Vice President and an IOC member from Great Britain, is heading the 10-member Evaluation Commission for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games bid cities – Madrid, Tokyo and Istanbul.
IOC President Jacques Rogge says “we’ve assembled a strong and highly knowledgeable group of individuals led by the experienced Sir Craig Reedie who knows as well as anybody what it takes to host a sustainable, well-organized and ultimately successful Olympic Games”.
The commission will visit the three bid cities in 2013 – Tokyo March 4-7, Madrid March 18-21 and Istanbul March 24-27. The three bid cities must submit their candidature files by January 7, 2013.
Reedie said, “I am honoured to have been chosen as head of the 2020 Evaluation Commission, which brings with it a wide range of experience and represents all facets of the Olympic Movement, in particular the athletes. I look forward to working wit my fellow Commission members and the three Candidate Cities in the run-up to next September’s election”.
The commission is to visit each city and spend four full days with each bid team examining the 14 themes of the IOC’s candidature questionnaire, which includes topics such as vision and legacy, transport, accommodation, finance and environment; and they will visit the competition and non-competition sites and venues proposed in the bid.
The commission’s report will be published ahead of a briefing for IOC members in early July 2013. The entire IOC will vote on the host city for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in September 2013 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
