IOC confirms six 2020 Olympic bidders with official announcement

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced Friday from Lausanne that six cities have applied to bid for the 2020 Olympic Games.

The cities are Baku in Azerbaijan, Doha in Qatar, Istanbul in Turkey, Madrid in Spain, Rome in Italy and Tokyo in Japan.

The six cities responded before Thursday’s application deadline and have now been entered into the applicant phase of the campaign. This number is down from recent years – seven applied for the 2016 Games, nine for 2012, ten for 2008 and eleven for 2004.

All six cities have bid for the Games in the recent past – Baku missed the shortlist for 2016; Doha was eliminated from the campaign for 2016 because of dates proposed outside the acceptable window; Istanbul bid four previous times, the last for 2012 when the city missed the shortlist; Madrid came second for 2016 and third for 2012; Rome came second for the 2004 Games; and Tokyo was third for 2016.

Both Rome and Tokyo have already hosted the Games, consecutively, in 1960 and 1964 respectively.

In the announcement, the IOC detailed an exception that was made regarding Doha’s request to move the Games dates beyond the preferred window. The organization has asked the Doha bidders to ensure the health of the athletes and spectators in the sweltering heat; the IOC will publish a list of events that must be scheduled in the early morning or late afternoon.

“This scheduling should not be detrimental to the organisation, the broadcast coverage or the spectator experience,” the announcement said.

“These assurances, along with the other elements of the Qatari application, will be evaluated by the [Executive Board] in May 2012.”

The bids now have until September 15 to pay an application fee before they will be trained at a bid city seminar in Lausanne from November 3 to 4. The final election will be September 7, 2013 in Beunos Aires.
