Baku, Azerbaijan to bid for 2020 Olympic Games

The Azerbaijan National Olympic Committee has submitted the bid of capital city Baku to host the 2020 Olympic Games. The Associated Press reports that the required paperwork was filed two weeks ago without any announcement.

On Wednesday rumours surfaced that Baku officials may have reconsidered bidding and earlier identified the city on a list of possible last-minute entries to the field.

The news comes on Thursday, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) deadline date for applications.

Baku applied to bid for the 2016 Olympic Games but failed to qualify for the shortlist.

Shortly before the 2016 loss in 2008 Azad Rahimov, Azerbaijan’s Minister of Youth and Sport told “We’ve gained huge experience. We learned the practical steps [of developing an Olympic plan] including things like transportation plans.”

“Sport is important to the economy of the country. We have already built 13 sports complexes and 24 are under construction. We’ve hosted the World Wrestling championships and the European Gymnastics Championships”

Baku joins a growing list of six announced bids from Rome, Madrid, Tokyo, Istanbul and Doha. The IOC will announce the final list of received applications Friday that could include additional last-minute entries. There were seven applications for the 2016 Games and nine for 2012.

Watch for the complete list of bidders, and further details, Friday.
