Baku 2020 officially launched its logo Wednesday, which was inspired by the world-famous Azerbaijani carpets.
Each brightly coloured individual thread is woven together with others to create “something amazing, delightful, surprising and beautiful”, said a press release.
The logo is not only a colourful representation of a carpet, the weave itself also subtly spells out Baku’s “dream date” of 2020.
According to the bid committee, the Baku 2020 logo is a visual articulation of the central proposition of the bid, bringing things together to create something much greater and more marvellous than simply the sum of their individual parts.
Baku 2020 says the concept of “coming together” is at the very heart of Azeri history and culture. The logo is therefore full of local meaning and provenance. It is not mere decoration, it is a graphical articulation of the bid’s slogan – “Together We Can”.
Meanwhile, a Hollywood director will be shooting a film about Azerbaijan in support of Baku’s bid. Konul Nurullayeva, executive director of Baku’s organizing committee, said, “we have attracted both local and foreign experts to the process of preparation for the Olympic Games. To shoot promotional videos and mini movies about Baku and Azerbaijan, we have drawn American director Rubert Veynfrayt from Hollywood. To date shooting has taken place in the sights of Baku and the regions of Azerbaijan”.
Nurullayeva added, “this is the second time of our candidature submission to host the Olympics, and we believe that this time we have much more chances to win, as we have presented an improved model of the Olympic Games, based on past experience”
Baku is considered an outsider in this competitive race – the same city’s application was denied after failing to reach benchmark evaluation scores at the start of its 2016 bid campaign. A formal application is due into the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on February 15 and the IOC will decide which applicants to accept as candidates at a meeting in Quebec City, Canada at the end of May.
The winner will be announced September 2013 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
