Azerbaijani Parliament Supports Baku 2020

The National Parliament of the Republic of Azerbaijan voted this week to fully endorse Baku’s bid for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.

Ogtay Asadov, Chairman of the Azerbaijani Parliament, has sent an official communication to Jacques Rogge, President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), announcing that Baku’s bid has the total support of the National Assembly and all the political parties in Azerbaijan.

Konul Nurullayeva, CEO of Baku 2020, said, “not only does our Parliament stand fully behind the bid to host the Olympics, but we are enthusiastically supported by every section of Azerbaijani society.

“The public opinion poll we carried out recently as part of our Applicant File showed 95 per cent support for the bid from ordinary Azerbaijanis. Ninety-three per cent also said they believed that hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Baku would have a positive impact on sport throughout the country.

“Our National Olympic Committee, our sports federations, our business community and the citizens of Baku would all very much like to welcome the Olympic Movement in 2020”, she said.
