Peru’s Bid Announcement For 2016 Games Premature

Peru’s Minister of Foreign Trade Mercedes Araoz has ruled out a report that Peru is bidding for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. He said the announcement was not a smoke screen to deviate attention from the possible changes in government.

Araoz regretted the announcement, which he said was received by the public with scepticism. The deadline to submit bids for the 2016 Games was last September.

There are seven cities bidding for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games and the list will be pared down at the International Olympic Committee (IOC) meeting being held next month.

Araoz said Peru bidding for the Olympic Games was not a joke. He said Peru has the capacity to host an Olympic Games and it’s just a question when the country will start working to organize a bid.

Although it won’t be possible for Peru to bid for the 2016 Games, a bid for 2020 is not out of the question.
