Baku 2016 To Hold Hearing On Sports And Environment

The Baku 2016 Summer Olympic Games bid committee is holding a hearing on “Sports and Environment in Azerbaijan: Ecological Issues in the Planning and Operation of Sports Venues”, in cooperation with the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources. The meeting will take place May 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Park Inn Hotel, Baku.

International specialists in planning and operating mega events such as the Athens 2004 Summer Games and the 2006 FIFA Football World Cup in Germany will be on hand to discuss with high-level delegates from the government how to achieve synergies between sports development and environmental protection.

The objective is to discuss general strategies for the interdisciplinary collaboration, and to obtain concrete suggestions regarding the eco-friendly planning, construction and operation of the venues proposed for Baku’s 2016 bid. The main focus, according to a Baku 2016 news release, will be placed on the remediation and transformation of the former on-shore oilfield Bibi-Heybat into a sustainable Olympic Park.
